Neal Stephenson

My collection here includes all of his earlier novels in American editions. It does not include his short stories or many magazine articles.

The Big U
NY: 1984 Vintage Books

The first edition of Neal Stephenson's first book, which was issued as a trade paperback. Mr. Stephenson originally refused to allow this book to be reprinted, although I think it is excellent. Shown is the front cover, the back cover, and the front of the uncorrected proof (the back cover is blank.)

Author's third book, and his first science fiction novel. The hardcover is the big kahuna of a Stephenson collection, as they are very scarce. It was issued simultaneously in a trade paperback edition.

The proof in red printed wrappers is the only such copy I've heard of. From various clues it appears to be precede the edition in tan wrappers.

This is a review copy, with a letter from the publisher laid in, which is how I know the exact publication date. The letter states that Stephenson is writing his next book, Quicksilver, with a fountain pen.
