I like (some) paintings, and I love books, so naturally I started collecting original artwork used in books and magazines. It's generally hard to find and quite expensive, but the occasional exception appears. Click on the thumbnails for large scans.

Original Preliminary Cover Art for The Wallet of Kai Lung Author: Ernest Bramah Book published in 1900 by Grant Richards, London.
Original sketch (pen-and-ink?) with yellow paint. The picture has the initials "BD" in the lower-right corner. Handwritten in pencil outside of the picture is "Sketch for Cover Design D. <illegible> Duncan." It might be "Robert", which would make BD Bob Duncan. I've included a close-up of the inscription for your bemusement. I'd appreciate any info about this. (Vertical line near the right edge caused by composite scan.) |
Stephen Fabian "Fafhrd, Come Back Now!" Swords and Deviltry by Fritz Lieber Ace paperback page 21.
According to editor Stuart David Schiff, this "was part of the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser folio for the Fritz Leiber issue of Whispers magazine. It was dropped at the last moment, so is the only artwork from that folio that did not see print. Its image is 6 1/2" x 10" on 11" x 14" textured paper." |
Stephen Fabian "Almuric"
8" x 11" pen and ink on paper. From a 1977 black and white Almuric portfolio published by Jonathan Bacon of Stygian Isle Press. There were only 350 copies printed. It is marked in pencil on the back "Almuric page 99-100". A great action scene very much in the spirit of Howard, where our hero battles a squadron of winged ghouls.
